A command used in email protocols (SMTP, IMAP, POP3) that upgrades an unencrypted connection to a secure, encrypted one using TLS or SSL. It starts as a plaintext connection on standard ports, then switches to encryption mid-session. This allows secure connections without a separate dedicated port for TLS.
