A power-saving state in which a computer, or a program running on a computer, reduces its activity or enters a standby mode. In this state, the computer maintains its current state in memory (RAM) while lowering power consumption by shutting down non-essential components such as the display and hard drives. Sleep mode enables the computer to resume full operation quickly, as the system state is preserved in RAM, which requires continuous power to maintain its contents. This mode is commonly used to conserve energy while keeping the system ready for immediate use.
