A screensaver is a program or animated image that is designed to appear on the screen when the computer is not in active use for a certain period of time. Screensavers were originally developed to prevent screen burn-in on older cathode ray tube (CRT) monitors. Screen burn-in ocurred when a static image is displayed on a screen for an extended period, causing the image to become permanently “burned” into the screen. Not so much of a problem with modern screens.
