Broadband technically refers to a data transmission mode that enables multiple data signals to travel simultaneously by using two or more separate channels within the same transmission medium.

In a more common context, broadband is a marketing term used to describe high-speed internet access that is always connected. This usage includes a range of high-speed technologies—such as DSL, cable, cellular, and satellite—that support simultaneous data transmission. Broadband speeds vary by technology but generally enable faster downloads, uploads, and streaming compared to older connection methods. Broadband speeds are typically measured in Mbps (megabits per second) or Gbps (gigabits per second), indicating how quickly data can be sent and received. Since broadband is “always on,” users do not need to dial in or wait to connect to the internet, making it convenient for homes and businesses with multiple users and devices.
