Initially, “app” was used as short hand for “application software”, however the term has evolved to refer to a mobile or web-based application. Apps are usually smaller and more specific in function. They are often downloaded from app stores on smartphones and tablets such as Google Play Store, Microsoft Store, or the Apple App Store, although the term is also used for similar lightweight applications on desktop computers.
